This page is dedicated to the memory of Captain Edward "Ned" Walter Connelly, Jr. During combat flight operations in 1968, CH-46A BuNo 152531 from HMM-165 made a desperate attempt to get in to pick up wounded Marines. The helicopter was shot down, but the crew was able to escape the aircraft. The pilot, Captain Edward W. Connelly of Agawam, Massachussetts, was killed by gunfire after leaving the aircraft. He was awarded a posthumous Silver Star for his actions in trying to pick up the wounded.

CITATION

Synopsis: The President of the United States takes pride in presenting the Silver Star Medal (Posthumously) to Edward W. Connelly, Jr. (0-93033), Captain, U.S. Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 165 (HMM-165), 1st Marine Aircraft Wing, in connection with combat operations against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam on May 5, 1968. By his courage, aggressive fighting spirit and steadfast devotion to duty in the face of extreme personal danger, Captain Connelly upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
