The Air Medal Award
 The AIR MEDAL was presented to all Marine pilots, Marine aircrew members, including corpsman, after they completing a total of twenty combat air missions.  Each subsequent twenty missions warranted another Air Medal award.

                           The  President  of  the  United  States  takes  pleasure  in  presenting
 
                the AIR MEDAL (1st Strike/Flight Award) to
 
FIRST  LIEUTENANT  MITCHELL  SAWYER
UNITED  STATES  MARINE  CORPS
 
                for  service  set  forth  in  the  following
 
                CITATION:
 
                     "For  meritorious  achievement  in  aerial  flight  as  a  designated  Pilot  with
Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 165
        during  combat  support  missions  in  support  of  the  Republic of Vietnam  against
        insurgent  communist  (Viet  Cong)  forces  from              31 August 1966               to
              12 September  1966.              He  contributed  materially  to  the  success  of  his
        squadron.    His  courage  and  devotion  to  duty  in  the  face  of  hazardous  flying
        conditions   were  in   keeping  with   the  highest   traditions  of   the  United  States
        Naval  Service."   The  number  1  to  represent  1  Strike/Flight  Award  is
               authorized.
